  • Dancer Series Statement | YouBeenKim

The Dancer painting series is a source of inspiration for YouBeen, drawing from a variety of dancers and music. Dancer Series Statement This is a series of abstract paintings depicting energy inspired by various styles and performances of dancers. Dances can be structured or lead by impromptu movement, and as a painter I move my body and use my arm rhythmically to paint on the canvas mimicking dance movements. Dancers use their bodies to express feelings and emotions. My painting process is very similar to a dancer; it involves physical movement, breath, and expression to create life. My color palette is black and white in order to express a raw imagery. I use canvases and brushes of different shapes and sizes to indicate the passion of performance with its various energies. I paint organic lines and geometric shapes to express diverse movements of the body. Additionally, using splashes of gooey paints on top of the canvas I portray bursts of passion.

  • Art | You Been Kim Painting | United States

Korean painter YouBeen Kim's painting series focuses on reflection of her internal self emotion painted during Covid-19 pandemics in the United States using acrylic, spray paint, marker and mixed mediums. Waves of Creation My ongoing series of expressive abstract paintings draws inspiration from my personal journey in 2023. The magnificent waves and breathtaking Pacific coast sunrises, as well as the enchanting experience of wading through a Spring adorned with cherry blossoms, have left a profound impact on me. Witnessing the immense power and resilience of nature in solitude, I can't help but recognize its deep connection to the creative process artists undergo. Working primarily in seclusion, I strive to translate my thoughts and ideas into visual expressions. While the creative journey often involves moments of self-doubt and deconstruction, it also offers glimpses of hope and opportunities for healing. The captivating and harmonious interplay between these elements fascinates me and adds a profound beauty to my artistic exploration. • Eve Statement | YouBeenKim

Collaboration work with Rizaldy in photography and painting Eve Statement - Collaborative Project Previously I have worked on realistic and expressionistic paintings to depict female portraits who have inspired me to be a strong woman. By making their portraits I feel connected to fearless female artists who strive to follow their passion in creating art as well as advocating feminism through their work. The main subject matter for this project was Eve from Adam and Eve. How I look at Eve is a woman who was very curious and eager for knowledge. In this mixed media collaborative project with Rizaldy, we used clay to create snake sculptures and then with photographs of women, leaves, and snakes we created a digital collage. The collage was then printed on two dimensional watercolor paper to be handled with traditional paint mediums. I especially enjoyed creating colorful paints and dynamic strokes to show bursts of energy to depict the awakening moment of Eve. VIEW ALL

  • Inner Self-Portrait Statement | YouBeenKim

This series reflects my internal emotions during the Covid-19 pandemic and explores the impact of events such as police brutality and wildfires. Through mixed media, bold colors, and expressive abstract self-portraits, I convey the profound effect of these experiences on my identity as an immigrant. Abstract Self-portraits This series focuses on reflection of my internal self emotion painted during Covid-19 pandemics. From the pandemic, shelter in place order, police brutality, to wild fires in America, I create these pieces to share how it is affecting me personally. Being an immigrant from Seoul, South Korea who moved to the United States when I was 16, I have been questioning my identity in the states since my arrival to this current unpredictable and confusing time. I depict what I desire within myself, and push the feeling onto canvas. My paintings show raw, inspiring, expressionistic abstract inner self-portraits to show how these experiences have impacted me through mixed media, bold colors, geometric and organic shapes, and splashes of paints.

  • Memories & Movement Statement | YouBeenKim

The Dancer painting series is a source of inspiration for YouBeen, drawing from a variety of dancers and music. Memories & Movement Statement Art has been my voice—a way to share my journey as an immigrant and to connect with others beyond language. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, I immigrated to the United States as a teenager, navigating the complexities of a new culture while holding onto my heritage. This experience shaped my artistic practice, leading me to use painting as a means of storytelling, a bridge between cultures, and a celebration of identity. At this critical time, when the world is grappling with divisions, it is more important than ever to expand our understanding of different cultures and listen to the stories of immigrants. Through my paintings, I honor and celebrate my Korean roots, my family’s journey, and the deep appreciation I have for my heritage. My work is an invitation to see that, despite our differences, we are deeply connected as human beings bound by shared emotions, resilience, and the universal longing for belonging. Using expressive abstraction, I translate personal and collective narratives into color, texture, and movement. The waves of my brushstrokes echo the waves of migration, change, and adaptation. Layers of paint mirror the layers of memory, history, and transformation that shape who we are. Through my art, I seek to create spaces where stories can be seen and felt—where cultural beauty is not just preserved, but shared, embraced, and understood. I believe that visual art has the power to bring communities together, to spark dialogue, and to foster empathy. My paintings are a tribute to my roots, my journey, and to the countless immigrant voices that deserve to be heard. By sharing my story, I hope to contribute to a world where art becomes a bridge—one that connects, heals, and reminds us of our shared humanity.
